LASIK

At Wichita Vision Institute, our commitment to providing the most advanced laser vision correction technology ensures that our patients receive the highest quality care and the best possible outcomes. Using state-of-the-art technology, we perform customized LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) procedures. LASIK allows our patients to minimize dependence on glasses and contact lenses, opening up new possibilities for work, fun, and their everyday activities.

What is LASIK Surgery?

LASIK is a revolutionary refractive surgery that corrects common vision problems, including nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. The procedure works by reshaping the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye, to improve how light rays are focused on the retina.

This reshaping is precise and allows your eyes to properly focus on images, resulting in clearer vision without the need for visual aids. The LASIK procedure typically takes less than 20 minutes for both eyes, with the actual laser treatment lasting only seconds per eye.

Most patients experience immediate improvement in their vision, with continued improvement as their eyes heal over the following days and weeks. The recovery process is often very quick, with many patients returning to most of their normal activities within 24 to 48 hours.

Advanced Technology at Wichita Vision Institute

iDesign Technology

At Wichita Vision Institute, we are proud to utilize advanced iDesign technology, which offers some of the best diagnostic precision in laser vision correction. The iDesign system captures an incredibly detailed three-dimensional map of your eye using over 1,200 unique data points.

This comprehensive mapping technology analyzes the entire system of your eye, including both lower and higher-order aberrations that can affect the quality of your vision.

The detailed measurements provided by iDesign technology enable Dr. Reena Patel to create a truly customized LASIK or PRK surgery treatment plan for each patient. Thus we can address the unique characteristics of each of your eyes to try to improve your vision to the best that it can be corrected.

iFS Femtosecond Laser

Our surgical procedures also utilize the advanced iFS femtosecond laser technology, which makes LASIK surgery safer and more precise. The femtosecond laser creates a corneal flap with incredible accuracy, using ultra-short laser pulses that are measured in femtoseconds (one quadrillionth of a second).

This blade-free technique offers numerous advantages over traditional microkeratome methods. The precision of the femtosecond laser allows for customization of the flap, making sure the procedure is tailored to each patient’s eye anatomy.

This level of control helps ensure optimal healing and visual recovery.

VISX S4 IR Excimer Laser

The reshaping of the cornea is accomplished using our VISX S4 IR Excimer laser system, one of the most sophisticated and proven laser platforms available for vision correction. This advanced excimer laser delivers precise pulses of cool ultraviolet light that gently reshape the corneal tissue without generating heat or affecting surrounding areas.

The VISX S4 IR system features advanced tracking technology that monitors eye movement during the procedure, ensuring that the laser treatment remains precisely centered even if the eye moves slightly. This tracking capability, combined with the laser’s rapid pulse rate, helps ensure accurate treatment delivery and optimal visual outcomes.

What is iLASIK™?

At Wichita Vision Institute, we perform iLASIK™, which represents the integration of our advanced diagnostic and surgical technologies into a comprehensive, custom vision correction system. iLASIK™ combines the precision mapping of iDesign technology with the blade-free flap creation of the iFS femtosecond laser and the proven accuracy of the VISX excimer laser system.

This integrated approach ensures that every aspect of your LASIK procedure is customized to your individual needs and performed with the highest level of precision available. The iLASIK platform has been extensively studied and has demonstrated excellent safety and efficacy outcomes in clinical trials and real-world applications.

What Happens at My LASIK Consultation?

While LASIK can help many people achieve clear vision, it is not recommended for everyone. To find out if you might be a good candidate for LASIK, the first step is to schedule a LASIK consultation with Dr. Reena Patel at Wichita Vision Institute. During your consultation, our detail-oriented technicians will take various measurements and perform tests to determine if your refractive error, corneal thickness, and overall eye health may make you a good fit for LASIK.

At Wichita Vision Institute, we realize that considering LASIK is a big deal: you may be nervous about cost, fear of something going wrong, or confusion about technologies. Luckily, we offer a risk-free way to get all of your questions answered. Our complimentary LASIK consultation in Wichita with Dr. Reena Patel is designed to put your mind at ease and determine if the procedure is recommended for your eyes. This comprehensive evaluation is performed by taking multiple scans of your eye, testing of your corneal thickness, identifying any eye diseases or other conditions, and a thorough overview of your medical history. Dr. Reena Patel will discuss whether you are a good candidate for LASIK, another eye procedure, or no procedure at all. Dr. Patel herself had LASIK surgery in 1999. Her LASIK experience actually inspired her to become a corneal specialist.

Who better to discuss LASIK surgery with than someone who has had LASIK herself and performed thousands of LASIK surgeries? She will discuss the associated risks and complications of LASIK surgery as well as thoroughly address all of your questions and concerns about the procedure.

What is Recovery Like After LASIK?

LASIK recovery is surprisingly fast and gentle. Here is what most patients experience:

Day 1

Your vision will be noticeably clearer, though slightly hazy. Your eyes may feel dry or gritty, but this passes quickly for most people.

The best part is that many patients see better the very next day than they ever did with glasses or contacts.

First Week

Most people return to work in 1–2 days. You should avoid eye makeup for one week, but you can shower, watch TV, and use your computer normally.

Activities such as swimming, skydiving, and scuba diving are restricted.

First Month

Your vision continues to sharpen and stabilize. Most activities are back to normal.

Swimming, skydiving, and scuba diving are permitted after the first month.
